Maryland Opens BIG 10 Play With Decimation Of Illinois

Maryland Opens BIG 10 Play With Decimation Of Illinois

img_0773

College Park, MD – Maryland opened Big 10 play at home with a very impressive win over Illinois 84-59. In a game that was supposed to be a lot more competitive especially with Maryland having two of their big men out, Damonte Dodd and Michal Cekovsky, Maryland made easy work of Illinois. Maryland decided to play small ball. Sometimes having L.G. Gill (6’8 230) playing center. This style of play allowed Maryland to spread the floor creating a variety of mismatches on the offensive end. Illinois lacks the team speed and athleticism to be able to recover after the guards of Maryland penetrated the lane.

For Illinois it was much of the same story of the past several seasons. Riding the back of senior shooting guard Malcolm Hill (6’6 225) the Illini tried to stay within respectability, but that in and of itself was very difficult on the night. Illinois was down 39-23 at half and Hill had twelve of those points. Hill lacking true point guard skills, plays mostly off the ball. He Has a solid stroke from deep and has an ability to post up smaller defenders. He is the main source of offense, and his team requires much of him to stay competitive. He just had zero help this game from his teammates. On the night Hill finished with 21 points and seven rebounds.

This may have been Maryland’s best performance of the season thus far. Mark Turgeon’s decision to play small may have opened a new realm of possibility for his team. Maryland’s strength is in its guard play, so we may be seeing a lot more of these smaller lineups in the future. Leading the way for Maryland was star point guard Melo Trimble (6’3 185). Trimble is continuing to show that he has his explosiveness back that was not there a season ago. Trimble got into the lane whenever he wanted and finished at the rim on several occasions over taller defenders. Trimble also showed an ability to pull up from mid range on drives and stay balanced to knock down shots. Trimble is starting to show why he was considered a first round talent after his freshman season. There were several scouts in attendance and his stock has to be on the rise. He did turn the ball over six times, which is a bit uncharacteristic of him, but that could be more of an anomaly. Melo finished with 20 points, 7-10 shooting, three rebounds and two assists.

The most impressive player on the floor had to be freshman point guard Anthony Cowan (6’0 170). Cowan continued his stellar play and showed more poise than he has in any other game this season. Cowan blew by defenders on the perimeter opening up the lane for dump off passes to cutters or open big men on several occasions. Cowan has a quick first step and finished extremely well against bigger defenders at the rim during this game. Cowan also hounds opposing ball handlers and uses his quickness to bother players especially on double teams. Cowan had three steals on the night and it could have been more if he was not called on a couple of reaching fouls. Cowan finished with twelve points, six assists, three rebounds, three steals and only one turnover in 34 minutes.

Two other players that had huge contributions for the Terps were Justin Jackson (6’7 225) and Jaylen Brantley (5’11 170). Jackson’s versatility was on full display. He showed an ability to hit perimeter jumpers, as well as his ability to put the ball on the floor and drive the lane. Jackson can finish with either hand on the drive, which is impressive at his size. He also provided solid interior defense using his length to get two blocks. Jackson finished with twelve points, four rebounds and two blocks. Brantley continued his stellar play coming of the bench. He provides another solid scoring option, as well as good leadership to keep the team on the right track. Brantley has a high motor when on the court. He is a constant effort player and it rubs off on his teammates. He had several tough rebounds in traffic and even scored on a put back while amongst the trees down low. Brantley has become a luxury for the Terps and it provides immediate impact when he is inserted into the game. Brantley finished with 13 points, five rebounds and three assists.

As BIG 10 play has begin the NBA scouts were in full attendance for this game. For Maryland, Melo Trimble will have to continue to show his improvement and for others like Justin Jackson the chance to make a lasting impression will be plenty. For Illinois, Malcolm Hill will have to show more effort on the defensive end, while also showing more of an ability to create for his teammates.

Up next for Illinois is a home game against Ohio State on Sunday.

Up next for Maryland is a home game against Nebraska on Sunday.

George Washington Rolls Over UCF 74-59

George Washington Rolls Over UCF 74-59

img_0672

Washington D.C. – George Washington overcame some first half struggles on offense to pull away from UCF in the second half to win 74-59. Sophomore shooting guard Jordan Roland (6’1 171) caught fire in the second half scoring 22 of his career high 27 points to help close the deal. UCF struggled immensely on the offensive end throughout the night. Without leading scorer and point guard B.J. Taylor, the knights lacked any flow on offense and struggled to get the massive sophomore big man Tacko Fall (7’6 290) involved until late in the second half. Second leading scorer Matt Williams (6’5 215) also struggled shooting going just 4-15 from the field.

This was not a pretty game for the Knights of UCF on either end of the floor. Without a true point guard on the floor they struggled to set their offense and did not get many open looks. When they did score it came off one on one offense and breaking down their man. Big man Tacko Fall did not get much opportunity in the first half. When he did get the ball in the post with position he struggled to make quick moves to score. On several occasions he turned right into double teams and either missed a short shot or got it blocked. The second half was much more encouraging for Fall. He was more decisive when posting up finishing several post ups with massive one handed dunks over defenders. He was also much more active on the offensive glass. Tacko also made an impact as a rim protector making sure that players either pulled up for jumpers or stayed on the perimeter entirely. Tacko is impossible to stop when he has deep post position. His length allows him to shoot overtop of any defender with ease. He is still raw, but his potential is through the roof. Fall finished with 16 points, seven rebounds and four blocks. Matt Williams finished with eleven points, 3 three-pointers and six rebounds.

For GW the second half provided a lot of promise as they will begin conference play at the end of the month. Jordan Roland showed that he can be a huge threat from the perimeter moving forward. In the last three games combined he is 10-18 from three. Roland found himself open often and he did not hesitate to launch from deep. Shooting over 41% from three on the year, he is the Colonials biggest threat from the perimeter. Roland showed an aggressiveness on offense that GW will have to rely on, if star power forward Tyler Cavanaugh (6’9 243) is having an off night. Roland finished with 27 points and five three-pointers.

With an NBA ready offensive skill set Cavanaugh is trying to go out on a high note in his senior year. Cavanaugh can play inside and out causing the defense to have to prepare to play him either way. He has the ability to post smaller defenders, scoring with a polished inside game. Cavanaugh is also the prototypical pick and pop player. He shoots the ball confidently and fluidly when coming off the pick and roll. There are times when Tyler could be more aggressive looking to score to exploit his matchups, but he is an unselfish player always looking to play within the system. Cavanaugh heated up in the second half and finished with 19 points, six rebounds and three assists.

Tacko Fall will be closely watched over for the remainder of this season by NBA scouts. I believe he should play through this year and the next before declaring fro the draft. He will still need a lot of time in the D-League either way.

As for Tyler Cavanaugh he is a late second round prospect this year. He should get an opportunity to play summer league and catch on for a training camp invite with his versatile offensive game.

Up next for GW is Thursday, December 22nd @ Miami

Up next for UCF is Sunday, December 18 vs Miami (OH)

Balance Is Key For Towson

Towson Defeats Fairleigh Dickinson 90-87

Balance Is Key For Towson

Towson, MD – Towson withstood a late last minute charge to close out Fairleigh Dickinson 90-87. This was a battle of runs throughout the game by both teams. Towson relied heavily on attacking the lane and playing their physical style of ball. FDU just did not have an answer. Their lack of size and physicality is Towson’s strength, and Towson took advantage. Towson had five players score in double figures, and out rebounded FDU 44 to 29. They also had 52 points in the paint, to only 28 by FDU. Towson also failed to make a three pointer in the game going 0-7. There were 84 total free throws in this game. We see yet again the officials are calling things close.

For FDU they got off to a solid start in the first half and took a 44 to 36 lead into the half. Junior wing Earl Potts Jr. (6’6 205) got off to a hot start in front of his hometown fans. Potts who is from nearby Spalding High School, the school that produced Rudy Gay, made three first half three-pointers. Potts who was the most improved player of the Northeast Conference last season had eleven points at the half. The second half was a different story. Potts struggled to get involved in the offense, and seemed reluctant to attack too much due to his backcourt teammates who were carrying the load. Potts finished with 13 points and six rebounds.

Starting shooting guard Darian Anderson (6’1 182) proved why he was the Knights leading scorer at 17 ppg. Anderson was quiet early on, but caught fire late in the first half hitting three late three-pointers. Anderson finished with four in the first half and had 16 points. Anderson has no filter when it comes to shooting three-pointers. It seems like he is more comfortable taking shots with players in his face. Anderson was super aggressive throughout and scored on several floaters in the lane. He finished with 33 points, six three-pointers, four assists and four rebounds.

Point guard Stephan Jiggetts (6’1 195) also had a solid game. Jiggetts used his body and physical style of play to get into the lane often. He initiates a lot of contact and also has the ability to find the open man. Jiggetts plays under control and provides a good contrast to fellow guard Anderson. Jiggetts finished with 25 points, 12-15 from the free throw line and had eight assists.

Towson like much of the year provided a scoring balance throughout its lineup. The Tigers had six players with nine points or over. Deshaun Morman (6’3 195) had nine points, Alex Thomas (6’9 250) eleven points, Eddie Keith (6’5 220) 13 points, William Adala Moto (6’7 225) 14 points, Mike Morsell (6’5 215) 18 points and John Davis (6’5 235) had 18 points. That is a very tough matchup for any team to game plan for. When you have players that can chip in close to ten points on any given night that gives you a huge advantage.

Mike Morsell used his savvy play to earn most of his points at the free throw line. Morsell drew constant fouls when getting defenders in the air or off balance and drawing contact. Morsell played an unselfish game and impacted it a little differently than normal. Mike came into the game averaging 18 ppg. and did just that and added six rebounds and five assists.

The other big impact player for Towson was senior wing player John Davis. Davis forces his way into the lane often. He can finish with contact and provides consistent effort on the boards. Davis provides a tricky mismatch when he is in the game. He has the strength of a forward but the height of a guard. He can post up smaller guards, or take post players off the dribble. He has a versatile skill set on offense. Davis finished with 18 points, 13 rebounds and two blocks.

This was a big win for Towson who had to battle back several times and withstand a late charge to pull out the victory. It was also encouraging for FDU, who now has Potts back looking closer to full strength after returning from injury. Both teams should do well in their respective conferences this season.

Up next for FDU is Wednesday @ Rutgers

Up next for Towson is Saturday @ UMBC
